What they have in common Wardley Maps, Remote cooperation, and Marketing AI?
They are new skills.
The manager reports: "We abolish the chancels". Remote-first is the new normal. Work remotely. And after a couple of months, we all wonder that it doesn't work. The team is staggered. Productivity is declining. It can be with mapping anyway. AIc. Any new competence.
So we keep mentally going back to the offices. The initiative will fizzle out. Nothing can be changed. [Do you know how many people have this in their heads?]
The problem is not the skill. A lot of organizations work remotely and it works for them. The problem is introducing change. An incompetent manager will just throw you in the water. And you swim.
An experienced manager knows this. And at the same time, it encounters three major obstacles over and over again.
1️⃣ Curse of knowledge.
You already know how to do it. So it's EXTREMELY challenging for you to see what it was like before. You are elsewhere. You automatically assume that others are already elsewhere too... and they don't. The manager may be able to work remotely and have appropriate habits... because he did it for 10 years over several time zones... but not the others. They have to learn it.
2️⃣ Inertia.
That's how we did it and it worked, so we'll keep doing it that way. Only the world has changed. When you're supposed to be productive while working remotely, physically pretty much everything has changed. Ergonomics. Transition rituals. Ambient stimuli. Relationships. And you have to realize that and work with it. It will not happen by itself.
3️⃣ Not interested.
No one cares that you found something great. There's a lot of stimulus and it didn't work out last time either. Enthuse people for a new framework, way of working or skill is challenging. People want to stay with that old, slightly frothy way of thinking... because it's convenient. That's why it's so hard to push through change when at the same time you don't have the power to decide that change.
Curse of knowledge. Inertia. I'm not interested. Do you want change? You have to overcome them.
What works for us?
👉 Start with a small group of enthusiasts.
👉 Visualize what is happening and what will happen.
👉 Solve everything in short cycles with quick visible benefits.
👉 Repeat, improve, discuss, gradually increase the range of competence.
👉 Then introduce new procedures for a wider range of people.
This is how we teach Strategic thinking. What works for you?
